Not very innovative, and of the shortest stories genre, but one cannot help oneself:
"As the last shuttle was being dismantled, the economists began praising each other for the success in ending this stupid and expensive folly, an achievement that shall release significant resources for real and urgent needs.
At the same time, the watchers, hiding in the asteroids belt, sent a confirming message to their home planet. The time was getting ripe for the final attack.
The Earthlings have indeed given up any meaningful capabilities of fighting a battle in space. And as any junior officer knew, one space-ship was all that you needed to conquer a planet without spaceships. After all with the appropriate use of gravity and space junk (of which Earth's orbit was full, thanks to the efforts that predated the decision to give up space) the attacked planet had no other choice but to yield to the attacker.
Now all that the watchers had to do was sit down and wait.
Soon enough Earth shall be joined their empire, like so many other planets who thought they were setting their priorities straight".
