לא אחת, עודי חושב על הנופלים, עולה ומהדהד בי שירה של פלישיה המנס , קאזאביאנקה ,  המוכר לרבים במילות הפתיחה "הנער עמד על הסיפון הבוער"  -  The boy stood on the burning deck Whence all but him had fled; The flame that lit the battle's wreck Shone round him o'er the dead. בתרגום חופשי לעברית, אומר הבית הראשון -  "הנער עמד על הסיפון הבוער משם כולם - מלבדו - כבר נמלטו ;  הלהבה אשר האירה את הספינה (שנטרפה בקרב) זהרה סביב לו ועל פני המתים. Incredissapointment = the feeling one has after an incredible achievment, which turns out to be not enough, but just by the tiniest measurement unit. example: We came so close to changing the political map in these elections. Just a few more votes going our way, and it could have been so very different. I am so incredissapointed! Susan's Boyle amazing performance at "Britan has got talent" does not express incredissapointment in itself. It is a moment of an incredible achievment. But the lyrics of the song she sings, express incredissapointment better than any other song I know: "I dreamed a dream in times gone by... Now life has killed The dream I dreamed."

מחקר חדש מלמד שכתיבה על נושא שחשוב או קרוב לנו, מועילה באופן מפתיע ביותר . הארץ מדווח שבמחקר "שערכו הפסיכולוגים ג'פרי כהן מאוניברסיטת סטנפורד וכריסטין לוג'ן מאוניברסיטת ווטרלו בקנדה, 45 סטודנטיות התחלקו לשתי קבוצות. אלה שבקבוצת המחקר קיבלו הנחייה פשוטה: לבחור ערך שקרוב לליבן – יצירתיות, פוליטיקה, ספורט, אמונה, אדם אהוב, מוסיקה – ולכתוב על אודותיו במשך כ-15 דקות. הנשים בקבוצת הבקרה התבקשו לכתוב אף הן מאמר על ערך שאינו חשוב להן כלל, ולנסות להסביר איך יכולה להיות לו חשיבות עבור מישהו אחר."  המחקר קבע חד משמעית שנשים אשר כתבו על נושאים הקרובים לליבן "איבדו בממוצע 1.5 קילו ממשקלן, בעוד נשים בקבוצת הבקרה העלו בממוצע 1.25 קילו, בהתאם לתבנית האופיינית בקרב סטודנטים לתואר ראשון". ההשערה של החוקרים היא כי "הכתיבה מתניעה תהליך רקורסיבי - האשה שכתבה על משהו שהיא אוהבת, חוזרת הביתה באותו לילה, הרגישה טוב עם ומבלי משים, לא היתה צריכה לאכול כדי לשפר את הרגשתה." כתוצאה, מתחיל להישבר ההרגל, וככל שהמהלך נמשך, "לאורך כמה שבועות, יכולה להיות לזה הש...

As the Webcomic XKCD phrased so subtly and well  -  (XKCD licensed this under  a  Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 2.5 License ).  2012 may be the last year. Ever. One minute for rationale speech: Yes, I do know that the perception of the 21/12/2012 as the LAST DAY of the MAYAN Calendar is wrong, and it is actually an indication for a change of eons, an end of the 13th Baktun and the beginning of the 14th Baktun, all a part of the great cycle of the Mayan Calendar long count . Now lets get back to having fun: 2012 may be the last year. Ever. Think about it. What would you like to do in this last year of the universe ? What wouldn't you like to do ? As it seems like a very potent line of pondering, I intend to revisit it during the year, in an attempt to create a cycle of songs dealing with the last year notion. It would be quite like last year's " poetry of the snuffles " cycle (in hebrew), a cycle which I hope shall not be rev...

The final stages of projects can be really dull. Pareto's rule, the law of the vital few , can be a good explanation. After all, most of the job has already been done, and now we come near the finishing touches. As exciting as they may be, in long term projects, most of the excitement has already been used, and it is hard to regain that "here comes the end!" feeling for the hundredth time. This intro probably explains how I found myself, while verifying a  punctuation  rule regarding English comma s,  enchanted by the way some grammatical examples could also shed a light on literary techniques. The objective - depict a father eating a muffin . The possibilities (to be shortly demonstrated, quoted with slight variations from Wikipedia ) are endless: Once upon a time, my father ate a muffin. My father ate the muffin, damn! My father, if you don’t mind me telling you this, ate the muffin. Sad and bitter, my father ate the muffin. My father, his eyes flashin...

במקרה נתקלתי בציטוט ישן של יצחק שמיר (ראש-הממשלה לשעבר, ומי שכתב אוטוביוגרפיה לאחר מכן) על החוויה של כתיבת ספר. ציטוט שנראה מתאים לכל יוצר, בכל זמן : "אני כתבתי את הספר ואני מאד רוצה שיקראו אותו, אך עיקר החשיבות אני רואה בכך שכתבתי אותו. מבחינתי לצאת למסע, להיות בו, להאמין בחשיבותו לא פחות חשוב מלהגיע לסיומו. אם יקנו את הספר - זה טוב, וגם אם לא יגיעו אנשים – זה טוב. אני מבטיח לך כי אצא מכאן באותו מצב רוח בדיוק".

As can be easily perceived, this blog is written using a pen name . As the question arises every now and then why I choose this form of publishing creations, this may be a good opportunity to give some reasons. The following link summarizes very nicely the pros and cons of pen-naming, and it is worth a read, in my mind, for every writer contemplating whether to publish under his real identity, or a fictitious one . As I'm clearly in favor of anonymity, I'll summarize the reasons for using a pen name: enables hiding personal traits, such as gender, age or other aspects like a funny name (gender mask worked excellently for legendary  James Tiptree jr. when she tried to penetrate a mainly-male field of writing - science fiction); eases shifting genres; assists the immensely quick and wonderfully productive writers in being taken seriously by readers, without their scary output being considered against them;   enables several writers to co-operate efficiently...

לבי במזרח ואני בקצוות מערב קורא את השורות והמרחקים בינו לביני עולים מהן ברורות. ואני נגנב לא סתם נלהב. רציתי לומר את האמת ועכשיו. האמת היא שאני מקנא במת המשורר שאת המילים כך חיבר. המילים האלה, שבין המזרח למערב, מעלות, טוב משאוכל אולי אי-פעם לקוות, תחושות חבויות שנקוות. לבי במזרח ואני בקצוות מערב. גם עכשיו.

They are called Flash fiction , and are usually demonstrated by a micro story commonly related to Earnest Hemingway : "For sale: Baby Shoes. Never used."   ( There are doubts regarding this story actually being by Hemingway ). One might doubt whether that specific story is a true story. Does that story really have a protagonist ? a conflict ? a resolution ? But apparently others are not bothered by that, as a micro stories competition I've just learned about, and a wired six-word-stories collection  taught me. Don't get me wrong. לפעמים נתקלים באינטרנט במשהו יפה. סתם כך. תמונה של מה שנקרא 'ירח אסיף' (harvest moon) בלשון-עם-זר, תפשה את עיניי ומטרידה את מנוחתי. אז הנה הקישור אליה . הירח בדרך-כלל ממלא ספרי ילדים לרוב. מהצד האחד, "ויהי ערב" האגדי - (התמונה מצוטטת מאתר " סימניה ") מהצד השני, התשובה המודרנית, אגדה מתהווה בפני-עצמה, "לילה בלי ירח" - (התמונה מצוטטת מ אתר YNET ) "ויהי ערב", העוסק ב'חטא', ב'כעס' וב'סליחה', ושנושא עליו ביקורות רבות בכל הנוגע לתפישת הסדר, הפרת הסדר, דיכוי ושליטה, ושאר ירקות מבית-מדרשו של המרקסיזם ונכדיו, זכה לתשובה מהפכנית-חתרנית מאלפת ומהנה בדמות "לילה בלי ירח". שני הספרים, לעניות דעתי, הינם כיום ויהיו גם בעוד דורות לקלאסיקות מאריכות-ימים. בוודאי כל זמן שהעברית תיוותר שפה חיה ומדוברת ופעוטות וספרים-שלפני-השינה ייפגשו. ההבדל בין הירחים של הספרים הוא בעצם אחד הביטויים הטובים ביותר שאפשר להציע להבדל בין הדורות, ולשינויים שעברו על היהודים-הישראלים מאז כתיבתו של הראשון ועד לכתיבתו של השני. ואני...
